Coaching is a structured conversation where a line manager supports a colleague to think through challenges, develop solutions, and improve performance or confidence in their role. It is useful because it:
- Builds capability rather than dependency
- Encourages reflection and problem-solving
- Strengthens trust between managers and staff
- Supports continuous development
Description:
Two sessions [please pick one] that are designed for line managers working in academic libraries who wish to strengthen their coaching skills to support staff effectively in a rapidly evolving higher education environment.
The sessions will combine practical coaching frameworks, live scenarios drawn from library settings and structured exercises.
Participants will explore how to move from directive management to developmental conversations, how to handle performance and wellbeing challenges with confidence, and how to use coaching techniques to build accountability, resilience and engagement within their teams.
You will receive guides and practice sheets you can use with people of your own choice to interact after the session at your own time and pace. You will not be asked to participate into role-play. Finally, confidentiality will be paramount during both sessions.
The workshop will include:
- Core coaching models adapted for library environments
- Structured practice conversations
- Realistic scenarios (performance, resistance, cross-site tensions, wellbeing concerns)
- Techniques for managing difficult conversations
- Tools for embedding coaching into everyday line management
Target Audience: Line managers and team leaders working in academic libraries (all grades), particularly those managing mixed teams (remote teams, cross-site staff, part-time staff).
