What is the MSDG Buddy Scheme?
The MSDG Buddy Scheme is an informal, peer-to-peer support initiative run by the Mercian Staff Development Group. It’s all about helping library staff across Mercian institutions connect, share experiences, and support each other’s growth.
Whether you’re:
- Starting a new role,
- Exploring a different area of library work,
- Or just looking for a fresh perspective from outside your own institution,
…the Buddy Scheme is here to help.
At its heart, the scheme pairs two people from different Mercian member institutions. One might have more experience and offer a listening ear, advice, and encouragement, but the relationship is designed to be two-way, flexible, and supportive for both.
How It Works
- Signing Up & Matching
It’s easy to get involved, just fill out a short online form.
You’ll let us know whether you’re looking for a buddy or happy to be one, and share a bit about your interests and goals.
We’ll then match you with someone who aligns with your needs, ideally from a different institution to broaden your perspective.
- Getting Started
Once matched, you’ll receive a simple guide with:
- What to expect from the scheme,
- Ideas for how and when to meet,
- Suggested topics to chat about.
- Meeting Up
You and your buddy can meet online or in person, whatever works best for you both.
Most meetings are virtual to keep things simple, but if you’re nearby and want to meet face-to-face, go for it!
Sessions are informal and flexible, usually under 2 hours and during work hours.
You might talk about:
- How things work at your institutions,
- Challenges and how you’re tackling them,
- Career advice or just a bit of moral support,
- Opportunities to collaborate or network.
- Duration
Buddying usually lasts around 6 months, but it’s totally fine to wrap up sooner or keep going informally if it’s working well.
We’ll ask for feedback at the end to help us improve the scheme for future participants.
What Buddying Isn’t
This isn’t formal mentoring, there’s no paperwork or performance tracking. It’s meant to be light-touch, informal, and led by you and your buddy.
Why It’s Worth It
Being part of the Buddy Scheme can help you:
- Learn about different organisational cultures,
- Gain fresh insights into library practices,
- Build your network across institutions,
- Develop soft skills like listening and communication,
- Boost your confidence and motivation.
